TiVo Hard Drive Upgrade

Not really sure if this fits in with the style of my blogs, but hey, it’s tech related, and it’s a trend! Anyway, I’ve been a TiVo customer for years, probably close to four. I started out with a standard unit, which had one tuner. That means I could only record one show at a time. A couple years later, I purchased a later version that had two turners which gave me the ability to record two shows at once on two different channels.

Lately I’ve been pushing the limits on the capacity of the hard drive space. It’s an 80gb unit, but in the recording mode I use (”High”, one under “Best” mode), I get approx 37 hours of recording space. That adds up quick when you get behind on watching previously recorded shows!

Years ago I had heard of a “manual” way of adding a second hard drive to the TiVo, but more recently, a few companies have emerged that sell these upgrades. For $118 shipped (received in less than a week), I got a 160-hour upgrade hard drive from www.weaknees.com that now gives me 85 hours of recording space! The installation was a breeze, and the parts and instructions were top quality. In under a half hour, I had the upgrade completed. TiVo automatically recognizes the additional hard drive, and configures the rest on its own – you do no programming!

If you have a TiVo, any make or model, even other brands of DVR’s, you should check out www.weaknees.com for upgrade options. They even sell brand new units that have been upgraded, and can upgrade your unit if you send it to them (if you aren’t comfortable doing it yourself). I highly recommend this company!
